U14 Girls Win Bronze at Provincials
Apr. 3, 2011

The U14 girls ended the season on a high note with a bronze medal in Division 2, Tier 3 play. After a disappointing first day at the Provincial Championships, the girls regrouped (only dropping 3 sets in the next 6 matches) to win the bronze.

Nerves got the best of the girls on Day 1, letting the Northumberland Breakers Gold come from behind to win the first set 23-25 and easily defeat us in the second 14-25. However, the girls regained their confidence with a decisive victory over the Clarington Grizzlies 25-10 and 25-13. The last game in pool play matched us against the higher seeded Halton Hurricanes. Dropping the first set 14-25, the girls came back to win the second set 25-16, but came up short in the third, 8-15. Despite a solid effort, the girls finished 3rd in their pool and were bound for Tier 3/4 play the following day.

The girls struggled again in their first set of Day 2, but were able to use their experience from the previous afternoon to push through to win 25-22 and 25-9 against ACTS Elites Burgundy. The next match against the Chatham Ballhawks proved to be more of a challenge, but the girls rose to the occasion defeating the Ballhawks 25-20 and 29-27. In the final match of the day, the girls faced the Sarnia Twin Bridges Thunder and secured first place in the pool with two straight wins, 25-18 and 25-21.

The first place finish the day before placed the girls in the Tier 3 quarterfinals against Niagara Rapids Blue. Again the girls got off to a slow start, dropping the first set 14-25. They came back however to win the second set 25-15 and a tough third set 15-11, to move through to the semi finals. In the semis the girls matched up against Durham Attack Red. With a 3 set victory over the Attack earlier in the year, the girls knew they would be in for a tough match. Starting off well with a 25-18 win in the first set, Durham Attack came back to win an extremely close second set 27-25. Despite excellent team play, the girls winning streak came to an end with a crushing 13-15 loss in the third set. In the bronze medal match the girls squared off against Storm Tsunami. With contributions from everyone on the team, the girls defeated the Tsunami with scores of 27-25 and 25-17 to win the bronze.

Congratulations to the girls on their well deserved bronze medal - we look forward to continuing next season on a winning note!

2010-2011 Season Outlook

Ending the 2009-2010 season with a team best finish at provincials, the U14 girls will look to the four returning players to continue this season on a winning note. The returning players have worked hard over the summer, attending volleyball camps and improving their physical condition, and their efforts will not go unnoticed on the court. They will be expected to provide leadership on and off the court as the rookies adjust to new positions and systems. The seven new additions are not to be taken lightly however, as many are multi-sport athletes, and will push the returning players to compete for a starting position.

The U14 Girls will be playing in their first exhibition tournament, hosted by the Markham Stingers, on November 14th, and the first OVA tournament will be on November 27th, in Stratford.

We look forward to the year ahead and improving upon on our record from last season.

2009/2010 SEASON

2009/2010 Season Recap

The coaching staff of the U14 team was impressed with the progress the girls demonstrated throughout the season. Despite several changes, particularly the maternity leave of Head Coach Kim Fitzgerald in January, the girls came together as a team and ended the season on a high note with a team best finish at Provincials. The girls did extremely well to adjust to different coaching styles and systems and have positioned themselves well for future success.

The coaches would like to thanks the girls for a great season and look forward to working with the returning players in the fall.
